Mattel made a group of aircraft toys in the early 70's called Hot Birds™.  These small airplanes had about a four inch wingspan.  There where at least 6 in a full set, I have two and would like to finish the set.  A co-worker / friend of mine traded some toys with me in 1998 and I ended up with these Items.

I received the following information from a collector via the web (THANKS):

" I am a HotBirds collector and have been since the '70's. Unfortunately they were only sold for approximately one year.  In my search since the '70's, I have only actually seen 18 planes and pictures of only five more including yours.  (yes, I count every one -that is how hard to find they are)
 
In case you do not know the background of the planes; here is some info I have picked up over the years.
 
1) HotBirds were produced in both the US and Hong kong.
  
2) They were painted in the Hot Wheels "Redlines" Spectraflame colors. (I believe there are 7 colors.)I have heard that the spectraflame colors were lead based but I have not yet confirmed this.
 
3) There are 6 different planes known to exist and rumors of more unproduced.
 
4) Your box art shows the other planes in the series.
