Zowees were first introduced in the early 1970's, not part of the Mattel toys in stores, but as premiums/promotions at Shell Oil Company, when you purchased gas. You could get them free with a fill up or you could by them for 49 cents from the station. There were eight different Zowees, each in a plastic baggie with a small paper ad stating that they were available from participating Shell dealers. The ad showed all eight Zowees. Five more models were added that sold in stores only.
